The Gift of Catching a Butterfly: A Lesson in Giftedness

Dear reader, let me take you on a journey back in time, to a sunny afternoon that taught me a valuable lesson about giftedness. It was the day I caught a butterfly.

The Chase

As a young lad, I was fascinated by the delicate, fluttering creatures that danced in the sunlight. One day, I spotted a particularly beautiful butterfly, its wings a kaleidoscope of colors. I decided to catch it.

Armed with a net, I chased the butterfly across the meadow, through the woods, and along the riverbank. But no matter how fast I ran or how high I jumped, the butterfly always seemed just out of reach.

The Lesson

Exhausted and disheartened, I sat down on a rock, watching the butterfly flit away. That’s when my grandfather, a wise and patient man, came to sit beside me. He told me, “Kevin, the butterfly is like your giftedness. You can’t chase it, you can’t force it. You have to let it come to you.“

Confused, I asked him what he meant. He explained that giftedness isn’t something you can acquire through sheer effort or will. It’s something that’s already within you, waiting to be discovered and nurtured.

The Discovery

As I sat there, pondering his words, the butterfly returned. It landed gently on my knee, as if it had chosen me. I realized then that my grandfather was right. I didn’t need to chase the butterfly. I just needed to be patient and let it come to me.
