Thanksgiving Dinner: A Lesson in Fair-Mindedness
Dear friends, today I want to share a story with you. A story that taught me a valuable lesson about fair-mindedness. It was a chilly Thanksgiving evening, many moons ago, but the warmth of the lesson it brought me still lingers.
The Setting
Our family had gathered around the dinner table, a cornucopia of delicious dishes spread before us. The air was filled with the aroma of roasted turkey, sweet cranberry sauce, and the comforting scent of pumpkin pie. But, as it often happens in life, beneath the surface of this idyllic scene, a storm was brewing.
The Conflict
My two nephews, both eager and impatient, had their eyes set on the last piece of pumpkin pie. As the elder of the family, the responsibility to resolve this dispute fell on my shoulders. I could have easily chosen the easy way out, favoring one over the other, but that would not have been fair, would it?
The Resolution
Instead, I decided to teach them a lesson in fair-mindedness. I asked each of them why they thought they deserved the pie. The older one claimed he deserved it because he was older, while the younger one argued that he should have it because he hadn’t had as much pie as his brother.
After listening to their arguments, I cut the pie into two equal halves. I explained to them that being fair-minded means considering all perspectives and making a decision that respects everyone’s rights and feelings. It doesn’t mean everyone will always get what they want, but it ensures everyone is treated with fairness and respect.
The Lesson
That Thanksgiving dinner taught us all a valuable lesson. Fair-mindedness isn’t just about being impartial or unbiased. It’s about understanding, empathy, and respect. It’s about listening to others, considering their perspectives, and making decisions that are fair and just.
So, my dear friends, as we approach another Thanksgiving, let’s remember to be fair-minded. Let’s listen to each other, respect each other’s perspectives, and make decisions that are fair and just. After all, isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about?
Until next time, remember: life’s greatest lessons are often learned at the dinner table.
Yours in wisdom,
Kev
