The Virtue of Patience and the Story of Retirement
Hello, dear readers. Pull up a chair and settle in for today’s tale paints a vivid picture about life’s most important skill – patience.
Remember to Heed Time
Picture this: A man at the zenith of his career decides it’s time to hang his boots. Not because he dislikes his work—quite the opposite—he loves it so much that he wants to retire while still passionate about what he does. This was me nearly two decades ago, preparing for an eager retirement from my lifelong profession as a school teacher.
The Excitement Wanes
Initially, retirement zinged with excitement: mornings unhurried by alarm clocks, afternoons not tethered by schedules, free lanes on roads less travelled during off-peak hours—it all seemed incredibly liberating!
But life has its curious ways; the novelty soon wore thin. Unending bouts of leisure can try your wits! That’s when I learnt one great truth-
‘Patience is a currency you need well into your sunset years.’
A Slowly Blooming Flower
In my newfound swathes of time bloomed myriad opportunities—to rediscover hobbies abandoned over years sacrificed at altar called job; to learn something new every now-and-then—be it strikingly enchanting hues in watercolor landscapes or brilliantly sharp coding languages like HTML (who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks?); or even some jolly good downtime doing absolutely nothing!
Nurturing Patience into Wisdom
I knew adjusting wouldn’t be easy but I steeled myself with patience. It wasn’t always smooth sailing – there were moments where frustration threatened peace and days appeared endless without end—but…’
‘The treasure lies within turmoil, if only we have the patience to unearth.’
-And unearth I did!
In due course through trials & tribulations aplenty came competence till ultimately emerged wisdom born out patience learned over retired years spent unrushed unforced uncrushed beneath weighty responsibilities or pressing duties…but merely lived as they should be——peacefully peacefully peacefully………
